Abstract

The anthropic pressure for the provision of irrigation of extensive monocultures of banana and cocoa from the surface hydrographic network of the Valencia canton has substantially reduced the flow and the water mirrors of the main surface water bodies of the canton The need to generate foreign exchange to maintain the socioeconomic functioning of the country must face both internal and external factors such as rapid population growth and the growing international demand for tropical agricultural products which has led to the conversion of large areas of land for production intensive agriculture of several monocultures not only in the study area but throughout Ecuador
